REVIEWS:

Knights of the Department Store is resplendent in its classic pop nuances, eerie imagery and emotive folk-inspired songwriting, allowing for the songs to seep into the wandering consciousness with its elegantly stirring narratives.

A short, rippling, mournful piano interlude, Waltz of the Matriarchs introduces Knights of the Department Store before moving into the album’s defining track Around the World, in which Young sings with subtle sarcasm “I’ve been around the world/just to come back here/and tell everyone you know/that I’ve been around the world”.

In the emotive folk/rocker I Don’t Want to Go to the Circus, Young’s vivid storytelling is stirring in its heartfelt honesty “They gave me another name/And you know I can’t even say it/Without the tears welling in my eyes/For the world that I lost to spell it/As they ripped us from your loving arms/My conscience made an exit”.

No One in their Right Mind diverts surprisingly into power-pop territory with skipping keys guided by a playful simplistic groove. As if conceding to the jocular exuberance of its predecessor Break the News follows with its moving pensiveness and harmonic, hymnal-like lamentation. It’s heartbreaking but gloriously so. Young’s love for the raw, intimate and beautifully sparse is captured in the finger-picked balladry of Chivalry for Beginners and Mary, Your Son.

The Great Indoors brings a startlingly uplifting moment towards the album’s end with its soulful, shimmering textures before a brief string instrumental Such Sweet Sorrow ties the album into a whole as symbolic as the title itself.
